Sympathy for the Devil

Evil is the forlorn soul’s muse,
It lives on the surface,
It reaches deep to sooth,
The end of all catharsis.

There is always the dark side of the moon,
So why to goodness do we always swoon?
The most dissonant tune,
Is someone’s only festoon.

Elegant shafts of evening light divide the mind,
Into the part that wants to fight,
And the part breaking against the human condition -
The part that needs to be forgiven.

/* So, this one is about how there really isn’t much of a right or wrong in most things and how almost everything is ultimately circumstantial. There are varying sides to all of us. Some prefer to call a particular side good and a particular side bad. But, ultimately everything does boil down to circumstance. If you believe in the traditional concept of good and evil, I guess there is a little of both in all of us (like shown so wonderfully in the pictures by friend Mukund, thanks mate for lending your pictures to this blog.Check out some of his stuff here https://www.facebook.com/MPaiPhoto). I think any attempts to jump at generalizations on as to what is good and bad is but a silly attempt by us humans to make some sense of all this existential meaninglessness .*/

  1. This is incredible... I too agree with the fact that sometimes things are born of circumstance and are beyond our control. Well penned :D

  5. Suyash so many circumstances are beyond our control; yet these is this doctrine of hope with its implications for goodness and happiness; so if we know we choose the latter

  6. There is the dark side to every light side. Evil always lurks somewhere. And yes, there is a necessary of forgiveness.

  7. I most love the line "the part that needs to be forgiven". Which we all share.

  8. "If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956" -- good and evil live inside us, and maybe we wouldn't be human if we didn't have it all.

  9. Those are fabulous pictures and I have always believed the truth lies somewhere in the middle...in those shades of gray and many times we just will never really know...great poem

  11. We must always have sympathy for the Devil if not we may not be able to see the light...

  12. Indeed! We have both in each of us and which part thrives is definitely circumstantial. Well penned!

  16. POW! I LOVE this. I wrote a poem inspired by the same song (did you hear "sympathy for the devil" by the rolling stone??) , more satirical than understanding. Here's the Link: http://apiarymagazine.com/please-let-introduce-susan-chast/

  17. We always seem to want, so badly, to cut our moments black and white, but all our days seem bathed in gray... Right, wrong - from different lenses, these seem a different song.

  18. I can appreciate this sentiment though sometimes it is very challenging to see the grey.
